How does the fire starter actually work?
The firestarter and its porous stone soaks up the oil so that when lit, it the fire stone burns long and slow giving enough time for your logs to catch and the fire to get well underway. You can see the step-by-step process on the blog here.
What oil can I use?
Lamp oil, Kerosene and Citronella oils are the only fuels you should ever use with your Fire Lighter. Do not use any other fuel sources.
How long does the stone need to soak for?
2minutes of soaking allows for ~10-15min of generous flame. For most firewood types this is perfect, if you use harder woods then you can increase soak time to 5min.
You can leave the stone in the oil for extended periods.
Where can I get extra oil from?
We sell the highest quality odorless lamp oil in New Zealand, which you can add to checkout on this product page for 2L included with your Fire Starter or seperately here.
Please note we are unable to send Lamp Oil outside of New Zealand.
You can find the fire lighter oil in most hardware stores, look for 'odorless lamp oil' in the flammable section. Citronella and kerosene also works.
Do I keep the fire starter stone in the fire, or remove it once lit?
Once lit, we recommend moving the stone away from the main heat and placing it to the side of the fire.
